Hazard identified
Health Canada’s sampling and testing program revealed that the coffee maker does not meet the lead requirements for kettles under the Hazardous Products (Kettles) Regulations.
Under the Kettles Regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, it is illegal to import, advertise or sell a kettle that releases more than 0.01 mg/kg of lead. Lead is highly toxic and can enter the body through the digestive system or the lungs. It accumulates in the body and can damage almost all body systems, especially the nervous system. Lead is toxic to children even at low exposure levels and has also been shown to have the potential to cause intellectual and behavioural deficits in children. Potential health effects associated with exposure to high levels of lead include vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, coma or even death.
Neither Health Canada nor Standa Importing and Distributing Co. Ltd. has received any reports of incidents or injuries to Canadians related to the use of this product.
For more information on the risks and symptoms of lead exposure, visit Health Canada's It's Your Health: Lead and Human Health.
