Product description

This recall involves Directed Remote Start Systems and interface modules. These are electronic control modules that are used to remotely start a vehicle while the vehicle is parked. The brand names of the remote start systems that are affected by this recall include the following: Astrostart, Autostart, Avital, Clifford, Command Start, Nordic Start, Orbit, Polar Start, Premier Defense, ProStart, Python, Ready Remote, Viper, Xpresskit and XpressStart.

Hazard identified

Directed LLC has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Push To Start (PTS) vehicles that have had a Directed Remote Start System installed between 2008 and 2014. These vehicles may have an installation related defect that may cause the vehicle's engine to shut down in certain situations, leading to potential injuries.

Neither Health Canada nor Directed LLC has received any reports of consumer incidents or injuries related to the use of the products.

Number sold

There were 883,545 units of the recalled products sold in Canada by automotive dealers and various other retailers.

Time period sold

The recalled products were sold from January 2009 to June 2014.

What you should do

Consumers who purchased a 2008 to 2014 Push To Start (PTS) vehicle and had a Directed Remote Start System installed should visit the Directed LLC website or call toll-free 1-888-770-7122 to verify if their system is part of the recall.

If the system is part of the recall, consumers should immediately schedule an appointment with the retailer that installed the Directed Remote Start System. The retailer will perform a service update to the system at no charge. If the retailer does not remedy this condition within three days of the appointment, contact Directed customer service at 1-888-770-7122.

Please note that the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits recalled products from being redistributed, sold or even given away in Canada.
