Rock On Rock Candles

Product description

The Rock On rock candle consists of an oil-burning fibreglass wick with ferrule that extends through a flat-shaped rock into a tin reservoir attached underneath the rock. The rock candles have various shapes and may have 1 to 4 reservoirs and wicks in the same rock. Consumers can continue to use the rock candles with 100% pure peanut oil.

Hazard identified

Health Canada’s inspection program found the recalled product does not meet the labelling and packaging requirements for consumer chemical products as set out in the Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations, 2001 issued under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act.

This product is recommended to be used with liquid paraffin oil and citronella oil. The company offered the recommended liquid paraffin oil for sale at the time of purchasing the rock candle. 99% pure liquid paraffin oil and citronella oil can pose a danger to human health, especially to children, if aspiration occurs. Aspiration occurs when the product is coughed up or vomited after being ingested. This coughing/vomiting causes small particles of the product to travel into the lungs and may result in severe health effects including pulmonary injury, chemical pneumonia or death. The rock candle intended to contain the fuel does not display the required warning information and is not supplied with the required child resistant closures.

As of March 6, 2017, the company has received no reports of incidents in Canada.

Number sold

Approximately 1824 units of the affected products were sold at various retailers in Nova Scotia, online via Etsy, and at various craft shows in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

Time period sold

The recalled rock candles were sold from April 2014 to March 3, 2017.
