Product description

This recall involves 13 types of Sargent Art tempera paints and finger paints manufactured and distributed between May 2015 and June 10, 2016. All colours and sizes of the following types of Sargent Art paints are included in this recall:

  • Art-Time Washable Finger Paint;
  • Washable Finger Paint;
  • Art-Time Washable Flourescent Finger Paint;
  • Art-Time Washable Glitter Finger Paint;
  • Flourescent Tempera Paint;
  • Art-Time Washable Flourescent Tempera Paint;
  • Washable Tempera Paint;
  • Washable Glitter Paint;
  • Art-Time Washable Paint;
  • Supreme Tempera Paint;
  • Liquid Tempera Paint;
  • Art-Time Tempera Paint; and 
  • Value Tempera Paint.

Hazard identified

The paint may contain harmful bacteria. Exposure to certain bacteria could have an adverse health effect in immunocompromised individuals, posing a risk of serious illness including a bacterial infection.  Consumers with a healthy immune system are generally not affected by the bacteria.

Neither Health Canada nor Sargent Art has received any reports of consumer incidents or illnesses in Canada related to the use of these products.

Number sold

Approximately 20,000 recalled products were sold in Canada; and 2.8 million products were sold in the United States.

Time period sold

The recalled paints were sold from May 2015 to June 2016 at various retail stores and school/daycare supply stores in Canada and the United States.

Place of origin

Manufactured in the United States.

What you should do

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled paint and contact Sargent Art for a refund.

For more information, consumers can contact Sargent Art at 1-800-827-8081 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or by visiting the company's website.

Consumers may view the release by the US CPSC on the Commission's website.

Please note that the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits recalled products from being redistributed, sold or even given away in Canada.

Health Canada would like to remind Canadians to report any health or safety incidents related to the use of this product or any other consumer product or cosmetic by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.
