This recall involves the following Top-Cote colour coats:

Hazard identified

Ducan Industries identified that the recalled products contained lead in excess of allowable limits.

Under the Surface Coating Materials Regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, it is illegal to import, advertise or sell a surface coating material that contains more than 90 mg/kg total lead. Lead is highly toxic, especially to children. A range of serious health effects have been associated with exposure to lead, including anaemia (a deficiency of red blood cells) as well as brain and nervous system damage.

As of July 21, 2017, the company has received one report of the affected products containing excessive lead content in Canada.  Ducan Industries Ltd. has not received any reports of consumer injuries related to the use of this product.

Number sold

Approximately 50,000 units of the recalled products were sold in Canada.

Time period sold

The recalled products were sold from 2006 to 2011.

What you should do

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled products.  The shelf life of the product is three years from the manufacturing date and the liquid coating gradually hardens in the can making the contents unusable.  Any unused products should be returned to Ducan for proper disposal.
